Kings Landing

The grist mill in Kings Landing.

The Kings Landing Historical Settlement, nestled in the Saint John River valley. It's about 20 minutes drive from the city of Fredericton. It's a must visit in New Brunswick. Kings Landing opens for the Sugar Bush weekend (end of March/early April), and from the summer till Thanksgiving weekend.

"Kings Landing is a place where over 100 years of New Brunswick’s history and culture comes to life. This is the 19th century. It is a place where you can touch, taste, hear, see and truly experience the 1800s. It is more than just history, it’s history well told."

Here, you'll get to experience the bustle of farm life and witness the settlement in the 19th century. There're over 70 historic buildings, including homes, tradesmen's shops, churches, a parish school, and an inn. There were a few wealthy families, many craftmen and farmers, as well as some slaves.

Each staff member in various buildings adopted the story of an individual. They were friendly and did a good job in playing their roles throughout the day.

The "treadmill" for a horse to perform log sawing while running on it. Amazing!

Fresh apples on the tree.

Trying to imagine myself living in the settlement...

The making of apple cider, using freshly picked apples.

The weather was pleasant when we were there. The fall breeze, warm sunshine, a myriad of fall colours, peaceful settlement, and running stream have made this a fascinating place!

How does it look like in the winter? Here are some pictures taken during my visit during the Sugar Bush weekend:

The snowbank and frozen falls.

Tapping the maple trees.

Boiling the sap iron cauldrons over an open fire.

Demonstrating the art of syrup and sugar making as it was performed 150 years ago.

The maple candy. Yumm...super sweet though :)
